Sunflower Natural Dye Textiles emerged as a spin-off from Sunflower Art Gallery & Art Classes in 2006, in partnership with Myanmar Clothes Co. Ltd. The journey began with silk exports from Inle, Myanmar, to Japan, eventually shifting towards natural dyes and handwoven textiles in response to the global movement advocating eco-friendliness and the preservation of traditional crafts. The brand gained recognition on Rakuten Online Shop in Japan, was supported by JETRO, and was showcased at various exhibitions.
In 2014, a studio was established in Shan State, and by 2015, a shop in Yangon. Despite pandemic challenges in 2020, Sunflower remains dedicated to promoting local products, ensuring quality, and empowering weavers through training and collaboration. As a social enterprise, Sunflower initiated the development of vocational schools that can teach systematically with a curriculum that encourages creativity and quality training for weavers in all regions of Myanmar.
In addition, it encouraged the trainees to produce their own designs according to the market expansion program while educating them and continuously working on introducing their products to the market. In this way, it advocates livelihood skills for women, creates job opportunities, and preserves the traditional heritage.
